Note 1: Other BYU undergraduate courses (including Salt Lake Center classes) in history may also be used to fill emphasis electives in either track.
Note 2: The Family History track requires 12 credits of Family History-focused coursework. Currently, there are only 8 credits of academic coursework available through Independent Study. In order to meet the 12 credits, students may use a combination of Directed Research (HIST 481R), Academic Internship credit (HIST 496R), and coursework available through BYU-Idaho Online. Please be aware that BYU-I courses run on a semester schedule and include group work with other students. If you are interested in pursuing the Family History track, please schedule an appointment with your advisor to discuss your academic record and a plan for completion.
BGS students in the family history track can now apply to take BYU-Idaho courses to substitute as electives (ii). Before being approved to take these courses, students must first complete Hist 217, The Family Historians Craft. Students will then contact the BGS office so we can notify BYU-Idaho that you are approved. We will then give you directions to apply to their program. Once you are approved, you can take the following (in order):
- FHGEN 130 Paleography
- FHGEN 241 Introduction to Research Methodology
- FHGEN 242 Introduction to Evidence Analysis
- FHGEN 340 Genealogical Writing
- FHGEN 351 US Geographic Specialization
- Or 352 Introduction to Genetic Genealogy
