Shape the Future: Choose an Emphasis in Education

Embark on a transformative journey with our Education emphasis. This program is crafted to empower aspiring educators with the knowledge, skills, and insights needed to make a profound impact in the field of education.

 

Requirements

Before applying to the Bachelor of General Studies Education Emphasis, you must have:

  1. Been accepted into a teaching major at BYU  (Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Physical Education  Teacher Education, Special Education, or Secondary Education teaching  major),
  2. Completed all university core and specific teaching major requirements, except student teaching, and
  3. Earned the minimum course grades and GPA  requirements for their teaching major (this varies depending on when  student was accepted into the teaching major).
Key Learning Outcomes

  1. Summarize the intended purposes of public education and analyze how well those are represented in our current society.
  2. Evaluate the role of public education in the social and civic development of children and youth.
  3. Explain how contextual factors, learner development, and learning differences, influence planning, teaching strategies, motivation, and student learning.
  4. Describe how quality educators model, teach, and create supportive learning environments to increase learning and strengthen student success.
  5. Analyze how knowing each “human being in all the world is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny” (Kevin Worthen, University Conference, August 2019) impacts them as an educator and the potential influence that understanding has on those whom they teach.
