Wherever you are in your life path, career, or the world, the BYU Bachelor of General Studies program is here to help you cross the finish line and graduate from BYU.

Gateway to Your BYU Graduation

1.

Complete your application to the Bachelor of General Studies program

2.

Select an area of emphasis for your General Studies degree.

3.

After formal admission to BGS, complete your General Education and emphasis courses (at least 10 credits after admission to the program).

4.

After admission, you have up to eight years to complete your degree from anywhere in the world.

5.

Take courses online through BYU Independent Study or in person at the BYU Salt Lake Center, through BYU evening classes in Provo, or in BYU day classes during spring and summer terms.

6.

We encourage you to participate in BYU graduation ceremonies upon completion of your graduation requirements!

*Note: BGS students are not eligible for Federal Student Aid, including work-study, but other financial assistance is available. We encourage you to apply for a BGS scholarship. For example, special scholarship funds are available for single parents.

Overview of Eligibility Requirements
Prior BYU Admission and Attendance Requirement

To be eligible students must have completed a minimum of 27 credit hours on campus in Provo as an admitted day student.

Previous BYU students

Life has taken you away from BYU, but you are now ready to finish your BYU degree.

You must have not completed any courses as an admitted BYU student in the last two years. Students cannot enroll in daytime regular semester courses.

Current BYU students

You’ve been studying on campus but now seek greater flexibility to finish your BYU degree.

Current BYU students who have completed at least 90 credits can apply for the BYU Bachelor of General Studies program if they meet the above requirements for admission.

Current BYU students who have not completed at least 90 credit hours will need to wait two years before applying to the BGS program. Students in the BGS program cannot enroll in daytime fall and winter semester courses receive federal financial aid, have an on-campus student job, or have other services only available to enrolled day students.

First degree

To be eligible students must have never received a bachelor’s degree or higher from any institution, including BYU.

Academic standing

To be eligible students must be in good standing (academic, financial, etc.) at all universities attended, having a 2.0 or higher BYU and cumulative GPA. If you have ever been on academic warning, probation, or suspension, please contact the BGS office before proceeding with the application.

Honor code

To be eligible students must abide by the CES Honor Code and receive an annual ecclesiastical endorsement.
